spoiler alert john doesn’t stay dead because shut up i like sappy happy endings.
there’s a philosopher’s stone involved. and astral projecting. and treason. and demon-summoning. and basically it’s all moran’s fault.
on a somewhat unrelated note, am i the only one out there who headcanons that john really DID hurt his leg in afghanistan? like sometime right before or right after he was shot, they ran into an IED or something. so he did have a real limp for a while, but it physically healed long before he mentally accepted it. *le shrug*
so i’ve been reading the dresden files.
but what if. like. there was an AU where sherlock was a wizard who could see ghosts.
wait no don’t leave yet, let me finish. ghosts stay behind because they’ve got unfinished business. sometimes that business is getting justice served to the person who made them ghosts in the first place. but vengeful murderer victim ghosts are boring; they know who killed them, they’ll just tell you. where’s the fun in that? no, the interesting murder victim ghosts are the ones who can’t remember how they died or why. those are the ones sherlock helps. not because he actually cares if they get their peace and can pass over or not, mind, but because it’s just s’damn intriguing. a murder mystery so baffling that even speaking to the dead victim can’t give you a clue? neat.
and then there’s john watson, dead army doctor. not much of a mystery there. man goes to war, gets shot, dies. except not; his wounds shouldn’t have been fatal. and if it had just been complications, or an unfortunate delay in treatment, his ghost wouldn’t still be around. so what the hell really happened?
how they met up, i couldn’t say. but john ends up a lot more interested in helping sherlock help other ghosts than worrying about his own passing much. and sherlock finds that having an intangible, invisible partner tapped strongly into the spiritual elements of magic is dead useful, no pun intended. especially since the army tags he’s bound to are a lot less cumbersome than his eternally-bitching former helper-spirit’s skull is.
uh. so yeah.
